Bogota is not a capital like any other: Situated on a plateau in the Andes, the Colombian metropolis has an exceptional climate that shapes its lively life and cityscape. Lush green parks alternate with historic buildings from the colonial era. Art and cultural institutions take you from the Muisca culture to the contemporary present. Bogota is thus also seen as an interface between South American cultural heritage and the proximity to the modern-western USA.
For a fantastic panorama
With a majestic aura
Colombia in miniature
There is almost no view, no panorama of Bogota without the Cerro de Monserrate. The local mountain is the city's landmark. Make up your mind on your Bogotá vacation: you can climb Monserrate on an idyllic hiking trail or simply hop on the cable car and be chauffeured to the top. The viewing platform provides the ideal opportunity to look out over the wooded surroundings and savannah surrounding Bogotá. At the bright white summit church, marvel at the shrine of the "Fallen Jesus", a popular pilgrimage site.
All that glitters is gold after all! In the truest sense of the word, the Museo del Oro is a real treasure in Bogota. Well over 35,000 exhibits from pre-Columbian times are on display here. You will learn a lot of interesting facts about the arts and crafts and the symbolism behind the intricately crafted pieces. The Museo del Oro is located at Santander Park in the heart of the lively city centre - perfect for reviewing your impressions over a coffee after your visit.
Experience Colombian history at the Plaza de Bolívar: Named after the South American independence fighter Simón Bolívar, the Plaza de Bolívar is one of Bogota's central sights. The area is lined with historic buildings, most of which date back to the Spanish colonial era. However, the first structures (such as a small chapel) that lined the square date back to the Muisca culture. Enjoy a stroll through the square and observe the daily hustle and bustle.
The Catedral Primada de Colombia will immediately captivate you with its majestic aura. Of course, you don't have to remember its full name ("Sacro Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada Basílica Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción de María en Bogotá"). It is most famous for its ornately crafted columns, which give the cathedral something of a temple feel. In the vaults and crypts are buried famous personalities, among others the founder of Bogotá, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada.
Hardly any other contemporary artist stands for Colombia as much as Fernando Botero. The Museo Botero in the historic district of La Candelaria is dedicated to his work. Almost 200 works - including paintings, drawings and sculptures - lead you chronologically through the life of this extraordinary artist. The exhibition is completed by art treasures collected from Botero's private collection. You will be able to admire international works by Dalí, Picasso, Renoire and Miró. Allow at least two hours!
