When you think of Brazil and especially Rio de Janeiro, the monumental statue of Christ certainly comes to mind. The 100 feet high Cristo Redentor dates back to 1931 and served as a model for numerous other statues of Christ around the world. There is also a chapel in the base of the Art Deco style statue.
In addition to Cristo Redentor, Sugarloaf Mountain is also considered a landmark of Rio de Janeiro. The rock owes its name to its shape as well as the importance of sugar cane for the city. A ride on the fully glazed cable car to the top gives you a wonderful view over the Atlantic Ocean; the view from the top itself can hardly be put into words.
The only desert in Brazil is located in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The white dunes are occasionally interrupted by crystal-clear lagoons, whose beaches are deserted. Go on tours here by jeep or go hiking. Sightseeing flights over this unique desert landscape are also offered.
A true island paradise in the Atlantic awaits you with the archipelago of Fernando De Noronha. The 21 islands are home to sea turtles, sharks, and dolphins as well as numerous tropical birds. Visitor numbers are strictly regulated, so you should book your flights to the island well in advance.
The Big Island, Ilha Grande, is one of the most famous islands in Brazil. 86 beaches are located here, as well as several national parks, which are home to numerous rare animals. The island is car-free and has retained a wonderfully original charm. You can reach it by boat in about two to three hours from Rio de Janeiro.
Between Argentina and Brazil, one of the most impressive natural wonders of the world awaits you: the Iguacu Waterfalls. 275 waterfalls plunge here from up to 270 feet into the depths. Numerous viewing platforms, which you can reach via hiking trails, offer breathtaking views. All around is also the national park of the same name, where you can admire rare animals. Less
