1. Seattle
Nestled on the Puget Sound with Mount Rainier as a backdrop to its famous skyline, Seattle is a mecca for outdoor activity, large tech, and of course, coffee. Despite its space-age cityscape of the Seattle Center and the Space Needle, this is still a laid-back city at its core—famous for its grunge music, plaid flannel, alternative culture, and rather temperamental weather. There’s always something to do in Seattle, rain or shine, from visiting the Museum of Pop Culture to sampling your way through the century-old Pike Place Market or stopping at one of the city’s hundreds of coffee shops.
2. Washington Mountains
When it comes to the great outdoors, it doesn’t get much better than the Pacific Northwest. Washington is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States, including absolutely magnificent mountains and several iconic volcanoes. Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Mount Saint Helens, and Mount Si are just a few of the famous peaks that you’ll find to hike up, ski down, or photograph to your heart’s content.
3. The San Juan Islands
An island vacation in Washington? Yes, you read that right. North of the Puget Sound, you’ll find an archipelago of 172 named islands (and up to 400 total islands), famous for their peaceful beaches, picturesque harbors, and resident orca pods. The protected waterways around the San Juan Islands are the best place in the world to catch a glimpse of killer whales in the wild. In addition to orcas, you’ll also frequently see humpback, minke, and gray whales.
4. Skagit Valley
Charming. Cozy. Picturesque. These words all perfectly describe the towns and communities of Washington’s Skagit Valley. But perhaps the best part of this lush, fertile valley is its tulips. It might surprise you to discover that you don’t need to fly to the Netherlands to see colorful sprawling fields of your favorite spring flowers. Skagit’s unique microclimate makes it the perfect place for growing tulips, producing gorgeous big blooms and vibrant colors of red, pink, yellow, and orange.
5. Apple Picking
Washington’s state fruit is the apple, and it’s hardly a surprise. Washington produces around 60% of all the apples in the United States, growing approximately 2.3 million tons of apples each year. You’ll find apple country east of the Cascades in the Wenatchee Valley and Lake Chelan. If you’re not up for a heavy-duty hike, consider visiting an apple orchard to take in some fresh air.
