Grove of giant sequoias
Peaceful meadow with wildflowers
Every Kings Canyon vacation includes a stop at the signature sequoia grove, the Grant Grove. The grove is one of the main attractions of the park, situated close to the limits of the neighboring Sequoia National Park, and features one of the world’s largest trees—the eponymous General Grant Tree. Also dubbed the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, this giant sequoia towers 267 feet into the sky with a base diameter of 29 feet.
Nestled between two majestic granite walls, the Zumwalt Meadow is one of the most picturesque spots in the Sierra frontcountry. Wander along an easy walking trail right to the heart of the Kings Canyon valley floor with the Kings River flowing beside you, surrounded by the soft hum of birdsong and lush tall grasses full of wildflowers and berry bushes.
Step between the upturned roots of this ancient sequoia into a room with a fascinating past. The Monarch Tree, also called the Fallen Monarch, fell hundreds of years ago after being burned by wildfires and its remains still rest on the forest floor of the Grant Grove. Since then, its hollowed core has served as temporary shelter for Native Americans and early pioneers, a hotel and saloon, and even stables for 32 horses from the U.S. Cavalry.
As one of the best scenic drives in California, the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway takes you on a winding 50-mile journey along granite cliffs, past massive canyons and roaring waterfalls, with plenty of scenic overlooks to stop and take in the spectacular scenery. The byway begins in the western Sierra Nevada foothills climbing to the Grant Grove before descending through the National Sequoia Forest until it ends in the Cedar Grove of the Kings Canyon National Park.
If you’re looking to get off the grid and experience the alpine wilderness beyond the park’s most popular destinations, consider an extended pack and overnight camping trip. You’ll hit the backcountry trails to more rugged destinations like the Monarch Divide or the Raes Lake Loop with an experienced packer guide and horses or mules to carry your gear.
