Natural pool where the Queen of Naples once bathed
The centre of the town: in the most famous square of the town stands the monument to the poet Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1594), after whom the square was also named. The lively heart of Sorrento lies above a deep gorge and is the place where everything comes together. There are numerous cafés here that invite you to take a short break with an espresso, and countless shops and boutiques await customers on the shopping streets leading off from here. Last but not least, the pretty baroque church of Santa Maria del Carmine with its yellow and white stucco façade and the 18th century palace are to be admired here.
The cathedral of Sorrento was built in the 15th century AD. It is worth a visit! Inside you can admire the splendid ceiling with the painting of Oronzo Malinconico and Giacomo del Po. The bishop's throne and the pulpit from 1573 are also worth seeing. Four ancient columns can be found in the cathedral's campanile. You can also see a piece of the old city wall when visiting the cathedral: A supporting arch of the old city wall is preserved directly behind the building. Otherwise, there are hardly any remains of the old fortification wall.
The Correale Museum is located in the summer residence of the Correale family and its garden "Villa alla Rota". The location alone is beautiful: the villa is set in the middle of a tranquil orange grove overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The patrician villa was a gift to the city from the brothers Pompeo and Alfredo Correale. Today, paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, archaeological finds, the precious porcelain collections and crystal works can be seen here. A must for fans of art and culture.
The birthplace of the famous poet Torquato Tasso is now the Hotel Albergo Imperial Tramontana. Two of the rooms are dedicated to the local celebrity and can be visited by those interested. The house could tell quite a few stories, as many famous visitors have already set foot over its threshold. Goethe, Ibsen and many other personalities have been guests of the hotel.
Il bagno della regina Giovanna - the former Queen of Naples, the French Joan I of Anjo, who was perceived as eccentric, loved this place. She often came to take a dip in the splendid natural pool surrounded by high cliffs. Supposedly not without male companions. Whatever. The fact is, the pool between rocky crevices is a wonderful place not to be missed when visiting Sorrento! Less
