If you’re interested in history, be sure to visit King John's Castle on Kings Island, at the medieval heart of Limerick. The 800 year old fortress is one of the best preserved castles from the Middle Ages. A Viking fortification was already here in 922, but the massive structure that stands today dates from the 13th century. Inside, visitors will find an exciting, multimedia exhibition that clearly shows you the history of the castle and the entire city. Children will particularly enjoy the animations and almost ghostly projections that take them straight back to the Middle Ages. After visiting the exhibition, relax in the in-house café in the castle courtyard.
If you’re interested in architecture, then St. Mary's Cathedral is a must. Located on King's Island, this striking cathedral was founded in 1168 by Donnell Mór O'Brien, King of Munster, and is the oldest building in the city that is still in daily use. A visit to the cathedral is like a journey through time, taking you from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Numerous sights await you inside, including six individual chapels. Parts of the Romanesque west gate, the nave, and the Arkaden arches all date from the 12th century, and have been well preserved to this day.
The Limerick City Gallery of Art is one of Ireland's leading contemporary art galleries, and beckons art lovers with its excellent selection of paintings from the past 300 years. Admire works by famous Irish painters such as Séan Keating or Jack B. Yeats, whose paintings from a fairground scene are exhibited here. International artists are also shown in the gallery. Ireland's biennial for contemporary art is also held on the premises. You will find the Limerick City Gallery of Art right at People's Park, in the neo-Romanesque Carnegie building from 1906, which originally housed a library. Entry is free.
This beautiful wooded park in the heart of the Georgian city is an excellent place to take a breather while on a Limerick tour. A large selection of deciduous and evergreen trees characterize the landscape. From spring to late summer, you’ll find a beautiful floral display here. Admire the splendidly restored red and white drinking fountain from the 19th century and the bandstand. The statue on the pillar in the middle of the park is by Thomas Spring Rice, a former Limerick MP.
Thomond Park Stadium is one of the most famous stadiums in Ireland. The rugby team of the Munster province remained undefeated here for a staggering 12 years - from 1995 to 2007. The team also celebrated their famous victories against New Zealand's All Blacks here in 1978 and 2016. Our Tourlane Travel Experts will organize a guided tour for you, during which you will visit the changing rooms in addition to the playing field. The museum contains countless memorabilia and should not be missed.
We recommend planning a trip to Limerick during the warmer summer months (June-August). If you wish to organize your own flights, consider flying to Shannon Airport (SNN), which is just 30 minutes drive from Limerick and has direct flights to the USA. Alternatively, Dublin Airport is approximately 2 hours drive.
