    Things to Do in Kilkenny

    1. Medieval Mile

Start your Kilkenny vacation at the Medieval Mile - a discovery trail that takes you through the center of Kilkenny. It connects the St. Canice Cathedral from the 13th century and the Anglo-Norman castle. There is a special "Medieval Mile" pass, which offers free admission to many attractions such as Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House or St. Canice's Cathedral, the Round Tower and the Medieval Mile Museum - ask your Tourlane Travel Expert for more information. The museum is located in the former 13th century St Mary's Church, which has been carefully restored. Find out more about Ireland's rich past here using artifacts and interactive displays. The museum has various audio guides and a treasure map for children. With the Medieval Mile Pass, you also receive discounts in various cafés and restaurants along the route.

    2. Kilkenny Castle

The impressive Kilkenny Castle dates from the 12th century and awaits visitors with its imposing walls and towers, amid picturesque gardens and parks. The mighty structure was once sold to the Republic of Ireland by the then owners, the Ormondes, in 1967, and renovated in the following years. Stroll through the cultivated gardens, which are free admission, or take a guided tour of the inside of the castle. If you would rather not take a guided tour but still want to learn more about the history of the building, watch an educational film in the Medieval Room in the southern tower.

    3. St. Canice's Cathedral

St. Canice's Cathedral is one of Kilkenny’s most famous attractions and is one of the most important medieval churches in Ireland. Its founding history goes back to the 6th century, but the building as we know it today was only built in the 13th century. Admire the round stained glass windows, marble floors and a number of fascinating 17th century tombstones. Inside the cathedral, admire the baptismal font and the St. Kieran chair, the chair of the Bishop of Ossory from 1120. The local round tower is the oldest building in the city and gives you a breathtaking view of the city. There are only two towers of this type in Ireland to climb.

    4. St. Mary's Cathedral

St. Mary's is a limestone cathedral built on the highest point in Kilkenny. The almost 56 meter high church tower has become the symbol of the city and dominates the landscape in and around Kilkenny. There is also a lot to discover in the Gothic church itself. For example, check out the high altar made of Italian marble, or the relics of St. Cosmas and Damian and St. Clements that were brought here from Rome.

    5. Kyteler's Pub

The Kyteler's Pub in the heart of Kilkenny is legendary and well worth visiting during your Galway vacation. According to local folklore, the last witch in Ireland, Alice de Kyteler, founded the pub in December 1263. The fourfold widow, who had amassed great wealth through her marriages, was alleged to have poisoned all her men. Before she could be put on trial, she managed to escape to mainland Europe. As a result, the original pub was burned down and later rebuilt. Stop by the cozy Irish pub and listen to the live music. Try traditional dishes, such as bacon with cabbage or Irish stew, and enjoy a glass of Kilkenny beer while talking to friendly locals.
