Mykonos’ most famous landmarks are its iconic windmills, built by the Venetian rulers of the island in the 16th century, visible throughout the town of Chora. Head south to explore windmills themselves and the rocky headland they were built on, the breeziest spot in town. Take your pick from the quaint tavernas in the area, enjoying tangy olives and salty Kopanisti Mykonou cheese as the long Greek evening draws in.
While the Venetians were in control of the island, they created a little slice of home in the harbor of Chora. Owned by rich merchants, these beautiful waterside houses had private boathouses in their basements, leading the locals to believe that many of them were owned by pirates. Today, the cost tavernas with whitewashed walls are a favorite with the locals and Tourlane’s Travel Experts alike.
Hop over to the neighboring island of Delos for an incredible view into the history of the Greek Islands. Explore the ancient ruins that dot the island, believed by the Ancient Greeks to be the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. Look upwards for the soaring columns of the Temple of the Delians and the Terrace of the Lions, before seeking out the intricate mosaics adorning the House of the Dolphins.
The Church of Paraportiani literally translates as the Church of Our Lady at the Side Gate, a reference to the fortifications it was once part of. Today, there aren’t any fortifications left, only an oddly-designed white church, built over 200 years and completed some time in the 17th century. Navigate the strange architecture of the church, a deep contrast to the neat buildings of the adjoining Little Venice. Less
