1. Cézanne’s Studio

Aix shares a deep connection with Paul Cézanne—it’s his birthplace, the site of his grave, and he lived and worked there for most of his life. You’ll feel his presence everywhere as you explore the same streets, places, and landscapes that inspired him. Cézanne’s Studio (Atelier de Cézanne), tucked away on a hilltop and surrounded by leafy foliage, looks much as it did when he died. The private studio is arrayed with easels, still-life models for his work, and cherished personal possessions—you’ll even find his hat and coat still hanging in the corner just as he left them.

2. Cours Mirabeau

Paris has the Champs-Élysées, and Aix has its Cours Mirabeau. This iconic tree-lined avenue is the heart of Aix, dividing Old Aix (Vieil Aix) from the aristocratic Quartier Mazarin. You can’t come to Aix without taking a walk under the green-tunneled canopy of plane trees decorated by several lovely fountains. Make sure to stop along the way at one of its many café terraces, it’s the best place to sit and watch the world go by!

3. Musée Granet

Opened in 1838, the Granet Museum (Musée Granet) has grown from a cozy provincial gallery into one of the most prestigious museums in the region, boasting around 12,000 masterpieces from a range of eras and styles. Taking its name from François-Marius Granet, one of its most generous benefactors, and housed in the buildings of the former priory of Malta, the museum’s spectacular collections including stunning pieces from Rubens, Rembrandt, Granet, Ingres, Cézanne, Giacometti, Picasso, and Klee.

4. Cathedrale Saint Sauveur

The Cathedral of Aix-en-Provence, or the Cathedrale Saint Sauveur, is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in the entire city—and a must-see highlight for architecture and history lovers alike. Started in the 5th century, this beautiful Roman Catholic church occupies the site where the ancient Roman Forum of Aix once stood in the first century. The cathedral wasn’t completed until the 18th century, and transformations to the church are reflected in its many architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Neo-Gothic elements.

5. Aix-en-Provence Markets

Markets are the heart and soul of France, and Aix-en-Provence doesn’t disappoint. The city’s many divine markets are a feast for the senses and one of the best ways to experience the sounds, colors, and flavors of Provence all at once. Grab a croissant before wandering the stalls of fresh produce at the daily food market at Place Richelme, or better yet, stop by Le Grand Marché. Aix’s largest open-air market, held three times a week, offers a magnificent spread of fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread, meat and fish, olives, oil, honey, and wine. You’ll also find beautiful arts and crafts stalls run by local designers selling everything from hand-woven wicker baskets and hats to tablecloths and hand-made organic soaps.

6. Lavender fields of Valensole

If you’re planning your Aix-en-Provence tour in the summer, don’t miss the chance to see the region’s lavender fields in bloom. Take a break from the bustle of the city for a day and visit the rolling hills of the Valensole Plateau with rows of purple flowers in bloom as far as the eye can see.
