First stop on your Yorkshire Dales road trip, are the Three Peaks: some of the most famous hikes of the UK. The hills Pen-y-Ghent (2277 feet); Whernside (2415 feet); and Ingleborough (2372 feet), are tackled by many in a single day, for the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’. For the brave-hearted—and strong-legged—it is around 25 miles in total, with a heck of a lot of climbing throughout. Of course, they can also be taken at a far more reasonable pace—one at a time! Along the route, you’ll pass a number of well-deserved tea stops and pubs, as well as the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct, recogniseable from the Harry Potter film series.
Brimham Rocks is a paradise for walkers and climbers alike, whatever the level. The dramatic limestone rock formations mark the highest point of the horizon, so it may be hard to believe that these natural spires were actually created by water—in fact, by rivers, long ago. Look out to the surrounding nature, and you’ll see miles upon miles of heather, and a fantastic abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Nature-lovers, this one’s for you.
Wensleydale is a valley, right in the heart of Yorkshire, which is known for its white, crumbly cheese of the same name. Whilst travelling through the Yorkshire Dales, stop for a night in the charming old market town of Wensley. Here, you can visit the creamery, where you can take home a tasty selection of butter, chutney, and of course, cheese—the Wensleydale with cranberries is particularly enjoyable! Be sure to visit at least one of the beautiful waterfalls: Aysgarth Falls, Whitfield Gill Force, Hardraw Force, and West Burton.
Calling, all walkers! The trek to the top of Malham Cove is one of the best walks in the region. The 260-foot tall limestone cliff face was formed by glacial meltwater some 12,000 years ago. Located just north of the town of Malham, the Cove is an incredible natural viewing platform, with breathtaking panoramic views: well worth the 400 steps! Journeying just 1.5 miles away, you’ll find a glacial lake, called Malham Tarn. Just remember to bring a good pair of sneakers or hiking boots along with you during your Yorkshire Dales road trip, and to wrap up warm!
If you fancy a day off from walking and climbing, then it’s time to go deep underground to one of the many caverns of the area. White Scar Cave, in Ingleton, boasts the title of the longest cave tour in Britain. Adventure down long, and often narrow, board-walks, where you’ll get to experience the full force of thundering waterfalls, and to see seemingly-supernatural formations of stalagmites and stalactites, up close.
