The approximately 50-mile-long artificial waterway is considered one of the greatest wonders of the world and a masterpiece of engineering. The Panama Canal stretches from Colón to Panama City and allows around 14,500 ships to pass through the country every year. At the Miraflores Visitors Center, located not far from Panama City near the Miraflores Lock, you can learn more about the history of this important canal.
East of Panama City on the Pacific coast, the ruins of the oldest Spanish colonial city await you. Since 2003 the area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Admire the cathedral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and numerous monasteries. In the museum near the ruins, you can learn about the history of the settlement.
Become an explorer in the tropical rainforest of Soberania National Park. More than 100 species of mammals, over 500 species of birds, and numerous amphibians, reptiles, and freshwater fish live here. You can explore the park on several hiking trails, including the so-called Pipeline Road, which is considered one of the best areas for bird watching.
The historic quarter of Panama City, Casco Viejo, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and awaits you with a multitude of buildings that are worth seeing and steeped in history. Besides colonial buildings along narrow streets, you can also look forward to countless charming cafés, bars, and restaurants. In the evening, sit in one of the rooftop bars and let your gaze wander over the roofs of the old town to the modern skyline.
The Metropolitan Natural Park welcomes you in the middle of the bustling Panama City. It is the only tropical nature reserve in Central America that is located in a city.
