Go on a Guided Game Drive

Kruger National Park is a brilliant destination to get up close and personal with exotic animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalos. Travelers to Kruger Park have two options in terms of game drives: guided game drives on an off-road vehicle with a guide, and self-driving tours. Even if you have your own car rental, we recommend going on at least one guided game drive. Experienced game drivers are very skilled at tracking these animals down, and have insider knowledge about where to find them in the park. They also communicate between themselves using walkie talkies to report on where the animals are spotted. Guided game drives typically take place at dawn or early afternoon. Dawn drives are the best time to spot the Big Five.

Go on Your Own Self-Drive Safari

If you prefer to travel at your own pace, anyone with a car rental is allowed to go on self-drive tours of the park. Make sure to remember your complimentary map, as Kruger Park is sprawling with many different routes. Be sure to use the restroom before setting off on your safari tour, because you must stay inside your vehicle at all times once you’ve left the safari lodge. You’ll see a multitude of hyenas, warthogs, gazelles, zebras, hippos, and giraffes—these animals are easier to spot. Giraffes move slowly and tower above the trees, and hyenas often move in packs along the roads searching for food. If you go on an early morning game drive, be sure to visit a lake or watering hole—it’s a great place to find thirsty animals having a morning drink, and to see hippos relaxing.
