1. Johannesburg
Your Best of South Africa Tour starts in Johannesburg, a city that hasn’t slowed down since the Witwatersrand gold rush built it up in the mid-1800s. You’ll delve into the fascinating history of South Africa’s largest city at the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. End the day at a live Jazz concert in the Maboneng Precinct, which showcases Johannesburg’s cultural vibrancy.
2. White River
Next, you’ll head northeast to White River, an area that is known for its tropical produce, exquisite handmade furniture, and the surrounding natural beauty. You’ll explore waterfalls, forested hills, and mighty rock faces that make the sweeping vistas of this town utterly unique. Explore the Lowveld National Botanical Garden and unwind at Rottcher Wineries. Get up-close to scaly creatures at the local reptile park and feel the pulse of local life at the Bagdad Farmers Market.
3. Kruger National Park
It’s time for your safari adventure to begin at Kruger National Park, South Africa’s world-famous wildlife reserve. This breathtaking savanna biome covers over 7,500 square miles and is famously home to the “Big Five” (buffalos, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos). You’ll explore the park in a safari truck with an expert guide. Exotic beasts will greet you at every turn. Antelopes, cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys, and zebras are just some of the over 750 species roaming the Kruger grounds.
4. Makalali Private Game Reserve
Your Best of South Africa Tour continues with another safari adventure at Makali Private Game Reserve. This sanctuary encompasses 100 square miles of pristine African bushveld in the Lowveld region of Limpopo. Drive the rolling hills of this ancient wildlife corridor connecting the Drakensberg Mountains to the Kruger National Park. Continue your quest to sight the “Big Five” until another glorious sunset calls you back to your safari lodge where it’s time for a pot of Umqombothi, South Africa’s quintessential corn brewed beer.
5. Cape Town
Your tour ends in one of Africa’s greatest cities: Cape Town. Climb Table Mountain for a view of the Mother City’s glittering coast, where the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans meet. Return to sea level for a stroll down along the beach, and a visit to the V&A Waterfront to partake in the multicultural cuisine like Bunny Chow–a local, Indian-inspired speciality that involves a hollowed bread loaf filled with curry.
