1. Christ Church

The Lutheran Christuskirche was designed by the famous architect Gottlieb Redecker in contrasting neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles and built in 1907 of local sandstone. Services are held every Sunday at 10:00 am in German. If you want to see the impressive interior of the church at another time during your Windhoek trip, there is the possibility to book a tour.

2. Equestrian Monument

This large statue, cast in Berlin around 1900, depicts a German Schutztruppe cavalryman in full uniform on his horse. The Reiterdenkmal was controversial for a long time, but is now seen as a memento to remind people that things can change. After changing locations many times, the monument has stood in front of the Old Fortress since 2010, offering beautiful views over the city.

3. Old Fort

Visit one of the oldest buildings in Windhoek on your Windhoek trip, with its foundation stone laid in 1890. The Old Fort served as a military headquarters until 1915, but ironically, the fort was never involved in any military action. It was later completely restructured and used as a hostel for Windhoek High School. Today, you will find the State Museum here, where the historical story leading up to Namibia's independence is displayed. In 1957 it was declared a national monument.

4. Ink Palace

The official government office is aptly nicknamed the Ink Palace, as vast amounts of writing were once done here with ink. The Ink Palace offers a view of Windhoek and is located in the extremely well-kept garden of the parliament, which was built in 1930. There you can also admire statues of Hosea Kutako, Captain Hendrik Witbooi and other historical figures. As the gardens are not always open to the public, it is advisable to book a tour in advance.

5. Katutura Township Tour

Katutura is one of Namibia's famous slums. Here you will observe scenes of real everyday life and interact with wise grandmothers, playful children and local entrepreneurs. Enjoy delicious local food that you can't buy in a regular supermarket. Visit a hair salon where the chatty ladies will braid your hair with exceptional speed and style. Don't be afraid to avail the services offered here as you are doing something good.

6. Heroes' Acre

The Heroes Acre is a war memorial dedicated to Namibia's national heroes. Apart from the statue of the unknown soldier, the memorial includes an amphitheatre that can seat 50,000 people. Walk up the stairs while enjoying the panoramic view of the city. In the nearby café you can have a cool drink and reflect on the impressions and the special atmosphere of the monument.

7. Joe's Beerhouse

At Joe's Beerhouse you can expect generous portions of German and Namibian cuisine in wonderfully cosy surroundings. From kudu to pork tenderloin with sauerkraut to vegetarian dishes, this charming restaurant has something for every gourmet. Dine al fresco, depending on the temperature, next to a blazing fire with warm mulled wine or with the sun on your face and a refreshing cold drink in hand. A children's area is also available.
